Rules and Regulations Governing the Identification of Sheep and Goats
250-RICR-40-05-7 INACTIVE RULE
Title | 250 | Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management |
Chapter | 40 | Agriculture and Resource Marketing |
Subchapter | 05 | Animal Health |
Part | 7 | Rules and Regulations Governing the Identification of Sheep and Goats |
Type of Filing | Adoption |
Regulation Status | Inactive |
Effective | 06/01/2008 to 06/01/2008 |
Regulation Authority:
RIGL Chapter 42-17.1; Chapter 42-17.6; Chapter 4-4; and Chapter 42-35 in addition to Code of Federal Regulations Title 9 part 79.6
Purpose and Reason:
The rules are necessary to remain consistent with federal regulations regarding the disease of sheep and goats known as scrapie. There is no reliable test for this fatal disease, and it has a very long incubation period. The only means of control is through monitoring herds and testing animals at slaughter. To trace potentially infected animals, there needs to be a unique means of ID for each animal.
