Purpose and Reason:
Effective December 1, 2005, the Department of Human Services will now consider a referral of an unclaimed body to be an application for a public-expense burial. DHS will make all reasonable efforts to locate friends or relatives and/or will issue a public notice/advertisement, allowing three to five days for a relative to come forward. If resources are discovered, efforts will be made by the Department to recoup the cost of funeral and burial expenses from the resources of the legally liable relative. The Department will disregard ninety dollars ($90.00) from the monthly gross earned income for each person employed.
