Purpose and Reason:
This new policy and procedure provides guidelines for DCYF staff who are responsible to carry out certain provisions of RIGL 23-13.1, the Safe Haven for Infants Act, enacted in July of 2001. This Act provides criminal immunity for a parent who voluntarily surrenders custody of an unharmed infant aged thirty (30) days or younger to a hospital, twenty-four hour emergency medical facility, hospital emergency room, fire station or police station and requires DCYF to take custody of the infant.
