Purpose and Reason:
Although the Department maintains children in their own homes whenever possible, certain events in a child’s life may require consideration of a temporary or long-term placement outside the home. State law (RIGL 40-11-5) provides that physicians/nurse practitioners, law enforcement officers and authorized Child Protective Investigators/ Social Caseworkers II shall have the right to take temporary protective custody of a child without the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
